IQ test?

June 30th, 2009

I always wondered how  people got to  be members of Mensa which is an organization of people with high IQ’s.   And this week I found out when I saw an ad in our local paper announcing that prospective members can show up and take a test to qualify.   I guess it’s like an audition—-only not quite American Idol.

I would  be curious to be a fly on the wall and see who shows up.  Meanwhile as far as I know no one in our house has ever been a member—but if you’re interested, you might want to start with this home kit before showing up at tryouts.

Courage

June 28th, 2009

These bracelets by Stella Pace were really popular awhile back—each bracelet is made of beads that are believed to carry special significance.  I was recovering from cancer treatment and I bought all the bracelets I thought I could use and I wore all of them.  All the time.  I thought I needed all the  help I could get.

This one, Courage,  is made of tiger’s eye beads.  At the time, courage was so important to me that I bought an extra one.  Just  in case mine broke.    But mine held up just fine—both the bracelet and my courage.    Maybe someone else can use them both right now.

This week’s catchers

June 28th, 2009

June is the most popular month for weddings, and appropriately, this week is all-white:

img_6204White scarf:  Ruth

When I received the e-mail and I saw this scarf, I fell in love with it. I wear scarfs all the time and they are my signature piece of clothing . Even though I am well past the bride stage of life I would love to receive and own this scarf.

White top: Vicki

The only thing I REALLY miss (having moved from Carmel to Ashland 5 years ago) is the summer drives down to Big Sur in my little blue convertible with the top down and Reggae blasting on the cassette player…. I was on pins and needles when Big Sur/Tassajara (almost) burned and read every blog, daily….I would love your Big Sur shirt and am so pleased (& not surprised) about your observation that Big Sur maintains it’s flavor/authenticity.

Hope you both enjoy your white winnings—please send your mailing address to: Cluttercast@gmail.com.

Birthdays and Big Sur

June 24th, 2009

This week I’ve had birthdays on my mind and on my blog, since my son just turned 21.   He wasn’t home and on his birthday I was in Big Sur, which is about an hour from where I live.   Coincidentally, I spent my 21st birthday in Big Sur, too– only it took me the whole summer to get there— driving from the east coast where I lived back then.

The wonderful thing about Big Sur is that in many ways it  hasn’t changed from the time of my birthday to my son’s.  Which is why I thought about this top–because this is a special item and Big Sur is a special place and it looks like they belong together.  It’s not my size and I can’t remember where or when or WHY I have it.   It’s  brand new,  beautifully embroidered,  perfect for a summer day– maybe it can bring a little bit of Big Sur—no matter how far away you are.

Not the U.S. Open

June 22nd, 2009

Father’s Day is the traditional time for the final round of the U.S. Open.  Only it spilled over into today, the day AFTER Father’s Day.  I’m sure plenty of people besides my husband were watching  on a weekday especially since it turned out to be an exciting battle for the championship.

He couldn’t take his eyes off the TV but I did and my eyes fell on this.  I can tell you WHERE I got it—(on Ebay) and WHY (for a mosaic project).    Just don’t ask me WHAT it is.   I have no idea.

summer scarf

June 22nd, 2009

Because it’s officially the start of summer.   Because it’s sheer and light and white.  Because it’s too pretty to sit in a drawer.   Because it’s June, and because even though it’s not a veil, it reminds me of something a bride would wear.  Which is why this feels like the right time for this scarf.

Summer officially begins:

Beach bag: Bonnie Walsh

Last year I would take my 2 year old grandaughter to the swimming pool and then stuff any of her wet toys into my bag. Then last week I discovered my bag hanging in my storage closet had mildew in the bottom of it.  My birthday is July 7th and what a wonderful useful present this would be

Hahah, this is perfect for me. I know is a little corny but my Boyfriend has always called me “bunny”, we met during the summer 08 while I was working for Clemson U. Now I´m back in my home country and he´s in VA doing his PhD. I´d love to surprise him with this.
(Diana: Love your comment and can’t wait to hear what your boyfriend thinks!!   Maybe you can convince him to send a picture with his new “bunny.”)

Is it too late to “spring back”?

June 17th, 2009

I’m such a terrible procrastinator, always running late.  I was feeling so proud of myself for my last post—getting a jump on the official first day of summer.

Then I realized I forgot this— which I meant to post a couple months back when it was more appropriate.   Although technically, I made it under the wire.   Until summer officially begins,  it’s still spring.   So Happy Easter.

Surprise: it’s summer!

June 15th, 2009

Clutter is not just a physical problem; it’s also mental.  I’m convinced my brain is so cluttered that I lose track of time.  Days, weeks, months, even seasons tend to sneak up on me somehow.

I have no idea what happened to the month of May.  Or to the first few weeks of June.  But I just looked at the calendar and realized that summer officially begins in a few days.  Which is why I’m posting this brand new beach bag NOW—and not next Christmas.

Travel treats: A girly goodbye gift

June 14th, 2009

This is a cluttercast courtesy of my daughter Alli.    Her husband was recently redeployed to Iraq, and she moved back to California.   Before she left,  she was given this set called “Travel treats”:  6 lotions and shower gels –all smelling like butter cream and frosting and burnt sugar—the kind of treats girls love.

Alli  didn’t think she would use this— and she hadn’t even unpacked before offering it to cluttercast.   I’m not sure if this comes from her natural tendency—or as a reaction to growing up with me.   Instead of holding onto things for years like I do,  Alli has no problems letting go.

Pirate party: Diane

My son’s birthday is coming up at the end of this month, and it would be great to have a Pirate theme. He is a big Pirate fan! He has everything from Pirate’s costume for Halloween to everyday Pirate toys… He would especially love the parrot. It is ironic because my boys’ school are also the Pirates. GO PIRATES!!

Rocky would be thrilled to have a new collar. His is about 3 years old and its  a Harley Davidson..  I think Rocky would rather wear that cute collar since he rides around in a MIniVan.. not on the back of a Harley.

Canine collar

June 10th, 2009

Since my son left for college, leaving me with an empty nest, he’s been urging me to get a dog.    He thinks I need a companion in addition to our cat.

We live in Carmel, possibly the most dog–friendly town in America.   So his suggestion does make sense.  What doesn’t make sense is owning the collar before we own the dog.

Pirate party

June 9th, 2009

A party with a pirate theme.   Put together in a package.  By someone else.   All I did was buy it, at a charity auction a few years ago.  I bought it because my son’s high school teams were the Pirates.

I thought it would be a kick—to see him and his football buddies with these little kids’ party items at a graduation party.    And it definitely would have been fun ….if the graduation hadn’t been 2 years ago.

Passage for parents

June 8th, 2009

A few years ago we were traveling through the Amish country in Pennsylvania.  I’d never been there and was fascinated by learning about their culture, especially about how their children grow up inside an isolated community without many of the modern things that are so much part of our kids’ lives.

Maybe that’s why I was surprised to see this plaque.  It didn’t seem to fit with the Amish lifestyle—-it sure fit with mine, so I bought it.

It needs to belong to a family that can appreciate it— in our house, we’ve outgrown it.
