#6 Elephants

It’s not that I don’t like elephants.  I really do.

Several years ago, some friends from South Africa brought us this set of placemats, napkins and napkin holders.   We really adore these friends, and I really like the design.  But I haven’t used this set and it feels….wrong.

Wrong not to put it to use.   And just a tiny bit wrong since I can’t help remembering that an elephant is the symbol of the Republican Party.

As a lifelong Democrat– and Huffington Post blogger– I just have a feeling that these elephants are not going to be fully embraced in my house.

My husband loves elephants. It’s his totem he says. Loves them. Maybe loves monkeys more.

You’ve had these for several years, which means that on several occasions you have looked at these, considered using them, and then decided not to. When will that ever change? I’d pass these along. Hard when it’s a gift, of course, but they don’t ever need to know (unless of course they read this blog).

LOVE this idea for a blog. Maybe it will inspire me to purge. Can’t wait to see what else you’ve got to de-accession. (And wouldn’t mind some juicier details of some of the items!)
Hope you’re not really “tossing” some of this – and merely donating or passing it along.

My mother collects elephants and would love these and use them! Great way to declutter by the way!

I don’t want them, but think you should give them away. Agree, don’t keep ‘em if you haven’t used them so far. They don’t have to be a gift, just donation.

    Love your blog idea, btw.

I don’t want this personally, but you didn’t have a choice for donate to charity, which is what I think you should do with this. I’m sure a local thrift store could make a bit of cash on this.

I have an uncle that loves elephants, he used to be an elephant trainer. He’d love these. I owe him a Christmas gift.

I voted “keep it” and here’s why… You mentioned feeling bad that you hadn’t used it. So I suggest a reprieve. Try using it a few times. Keep it in a place where you can reach for it automatically. Remember your friends and dream of visiting Africa. Having said that, if you still can’t get the Republican Party out of your mind, toss it!

I went to Africa before 9/11 and fell in love with the wildlife there. Because of that..my daughter has been immersed in African Wildlife…and she absolutely ADORES Elephants and has me buy them no matter where I travel…(and its hard to find Elephants in some places!!)

Check out my site…see if you can say NO to that face :)

Since you already have so many volunteer takers, I suppose there’s no point in mentioning Freecycle.org. You can declutter and make someone very happy in the process. Of course, it’s just nice to drop your clutter off anonymously at Goodwill and release it to the universe, too.

Here is the reason I would like to have them: A very good friend of mine was born and raised in Kenya, Africa. She very seldom gets home, and it would be a wonderful reminder to her of her homeland. She also collects elephants, and she is a Republican!

I would love to have those. Consider them to be a baby shower gift for me (cough), I mean the twins.

Great idea for the year! I seriously need to declutter-maybe I’ll steal your idea (with full credit, of course!)

They should come to live with me for several reasons. My son collects elephants, my husband is way more republican than just about anyone I know, and my daughter is planning on being a missionary in Africa, and loves all things from there.

    Thanks!

This is a perfect solution for your clutter and a great idea for your blog! It’s a bit like re-gifting, yet this way you know the receiver really wants it since they asked for it. If they decide to sell it on Ebay, fine… once you give something away it’s out of your hands. You are probably not going to be sending more than one thing to the same person.
    2009 a year of possibilities!

This blog is a work in progress and I love all the comments which are wonderful and useful and inspiring and hilarious. Not sure how to make these decisions about who gets what. Avoiding decisions is why I have so much clutter in the first place.

I also encourage you to consider Freecycle. It would save you postage cost. The person who wants the item is responsible for picking it up. It’s a great way to de-clutter.

I was thinking they were pretty nice until you brought up the Republican connection. I could NEVER get past that. Never. That is all I would see. I say donate them. Right away.

I run a daycare in my house and am always looking for cool placemats to interest the kids. The good ones actually help them have better table manners. And my son can make a wicked good elephant noise and he’s not even two.
