Birthdays and Big Sur

June 24th, 2009

This week I’ve had birthdays on my mind and on my blog, since my son just turned 21.   He wasn’t home and on his birthday I was in Big Sur, which is about an hour from where I live.   Coincidentally, I spent my 21st birthday in Big Sur, too– only it took me the whole summer to get there— driving from the east coast where I lived back then.

The wonderful thing about Big Sur is that in many ways it  hasn’t changed from the time of my birthday to my son’s.  Which is why I thought about this top–because this is a special item and Big Sur is a special place and it looks like they belong together.  It’s not my size and I can’t remember where or when or WHY I have it.   It’s  brand new,  beautifully embroidered,  perfect for a summer day– maybe it can bring a little bit of Big Sur—no matter how far away you are.

(Please check measurements:  43″ bust, about 47″ hips, 24″ long–buttons down front)

If you would like to have this item, please  let me know in a comment.   If you know someone else who might like it, I hope you’ll share this and let them know.

I would love to have this top!!! First, it would fit … so few things do these days (I’m on prednisone, and have “blown up” way beyond my normal size!). I can’t exactly tell you why I want this top; just that it is sooooo “me”!

Interesting…I just read a piece in The Guardian about Deetjen’s & Big Sur and commented to a friend that the only thing I REALLY miss (having moved from Carmel to Ashland 5 years ago) is the summer drives down to B.S. in my little blue convertible with the top down and Reggae blasting on the cassette player. Among many addresses & over a period of almost 35 years, I lived above Garrapata Beach, in Palo Colorado Cyn (very briefly) and 8 years in the Highlands. I’m now in Ashland and LOVE it but was on pins and needles when Big Sur/Tassajara (almost) burned and read every blog, daily. Am now supporting the refurbishment of the Tassajara area with (monthly) donations to the Zen Center. Anyway, would love your Big Sur shirt and am so pleased (& not surprised) abou your observation that B.S. maintains it’s flavor/authenticity (while all around it shifts) (am being polite). If you’re ever in Ashland, the welcome mat is out!

Hi, I would love your shirt to wear to my son’s wedding in July. He lives with his fiance near Tassajara, not too far from Big Sur and I think he would love the story. I don’t have money right now to buy anything clotheswise and think this would be a beautiful top to wear as a mother of the groom. Thank you
