Cluttercast: Red hat

February 20th, 2009

There’s something about the color red.  It says I’m sunny, I’m strong, I’m sassy.   When I had cancer, wearing red always made me feel better.

That’s when I bought this hat–it’s wool, trimmed in black velvet,  by Summer Tompkins.   I decided to become a hat person when I lost my hair during chemo.   I wasn’t one of those brave women who pull a hat over their bald hat and go out.   I never let anyone see me bald–and I wore wigs with a hat OVER the wig so the wig wouldn’t be so obvious.    This one didn’t fit over the wig–so I never wore it, but figured I could wear it when my hair grew back.

As soon as my hair grew back,  I  stopped being a hat person.

The other day I was in a restaurant and saw a group of women at a table, all wearing red hats.  They must be part of that Red Hat Society I’ve heard about.   Maybe someone wants to join—or maybe someone just wants to be sunny, strong and sassy.

My friend, Eleanor McCullough, just lost her dad. His memorial service, which is to be a sharing of his life, is today. She is holding the celebration in an old RED caboose that he helped her restore. It has so much of his memoribilia inside, that it is a wonderful place for all of us to remember him.

Eleanor has always been famous for her hats. She has a hat for every occassion. My mind is full of memories of her walking in, wearing one of her crazy hats. I think that this red hat would be the perfect gift to Eleanor, at the best possible time in her life. She could hang her RED hat, in the RED caboose, and have a womderful way to remember the celebration of her father’s life. She would LOVE to have this hat as a way of doing that. On RED Day, to knock out drugs, at our elementary school, she could wear it to support the NO DRUGS Day. She could also wear it to many other activities and for many other occassions, that I can’t even start to think of.

I would love for you to choose my friend, Eleanor, for the person who would receive this hat. I will also get some pictures to share with everyone, to show you the “Many Hats of Eleanor”. You will really enjoy these pictures. She is such a HOOT in her hats!! Having this RED hat to celebrate her Dad’s Life, would mean the world to her. I think she deserves this hat more than anyone else I can think of.
